THE TRIUMPH OF COMPASSION

Today Sunday, reading the newspaper El Pais, I found the article I give you below. It has been my source of joy to find mention of "mirror neurons" in this article, as in the previous post, Myr and talks about the role that human behavior developed.

Although the author of this paper applies the reasoning about compassion to animals should be logical to understand that, who does not love his neighbor distance is to love animals.

The triumph of compassion

The world is full of atrocities against humans and nonhumans, but the sad fact does not justify bullfighting. The tradition can not be used as ethical justification for a cruel practice

Compassion is the unpleasant emotion we feel when we imaginatively in the place of another to suffer, and suffer with him, I sympathize. We have begun to understand the mechanism of compassion through Giacomo Rizzolatti, discoverer of mirror neurons, that fire in our brains as well when we do or feel certain things like when we see that other do or feel. Mirror neurons in the insula was shot and produced in us a painful feeling when we see another suffer. This ability can be exercised and refined or, conversely, blunted by disuse.

All abominations, unfair or cruel where it is traditional practice

El Chile admired by Vargas Llosa runs banned two centuries ago, at the same time that slavery

Enlightenment thinkers from Adam Smith to Jeremy Bentham, put the compassion in the heart of their concerns. David Hume thought that compassion is the fundamental moral emotion (along with self-love.) Charles Darwin considered the most noble compassion of our virtues. Opposed to slavery and horrified by the cruelty of the Tierra del Fuego in Patagonia with strangers, he introduced his idea of expanding circle of compassion to explain the moral progress of mankind. The most primitive men are only sorry for his friends and relatives, then this feeling would spread to other groups, nations, races and species. Darwin thought that the circle of compassion will spread until it reaches its logical conclusion, that is, until it encompasses all creatures capable of suffering.

Indian thought, particularly Buddhism and Jainism, believe that ahimsa (non-violence, non-cruelty, compassion towards all sentient creatures) is the central principle of ethics. In contrast to the silence of the Catholic hierarchy, the Dalai Lama has publicly demanded the abolition of bullfighting. King Juan Carlos, and panned by its continued hunting, can not think of anything else to go now in defense of bullfighting. Had better identify with his predecessor illustrated Carlos III, which banned bullfights with the cumbersome and absolutist Fernando VII, which promoted.

Knowledge facilitates empathy. As I said Francis Crick (who discovered the double helix), the only authors who doubt the pain of dogs are those who have no dog. Many English did not doubt the suffering of the dogs or bulls. When a degenerate cut with a chainsaw paws of dogs from the pound of Tarragona and left to bleed to death, more than half a million English affixed their signatures in a petition to Congress demanding the introduction of animal abuse in the Penal Code . In Catalonia, the polls indicate a majority in favor of the abolition of bullfighting, the Catalan Parliament requested more than 200,000 signatures. I know a number of petition signers, all they did out of compassion, none of nationalism.

Altruism (4) Values Education and learning models.

If we really want a better, fairer, more benign for all, we can not sit around waiting for manna falling from Heaven. We choose to opt for having a pro-social attitude, today, now here. We can not stay in the complaint or take sterile the blame on the ruling class. To make a change, what better to start with ourselves, to clean the garden of our own home? And the funny thing is that the neighbors look at our garden and do not want to be unless we .... also cleaned and your neighbor will do the same because they want to be unless he ...

A pro-social attitude is learned and taught time. This attitude is underpinned by universal values . That are universal means they are valid for all and beyond any political partisanship, religious, racial etc. Here comes an example: In the wake of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Birth of Brahma Kumaris UN Foundation in 1996 published a booklet to work on these values and titled "Living Values, a practical guide" The 12 values that they make are: Love, Cooperation , Happiness, Honesty, Humility, Freedom, Peace, Respect, Responsibility, Simplicity, Tolerance and Unity.

This publication became part CVMM Project: "Sharing our values to create a better world." The objectives were to: 1 - Sensitize the people (children and adults) about the existence of a higher order of values 2 - Creating a safe environment for people to explore and express these values, 3 - offer methods and techniques, 4 - become more aware of the importance of self-development of people at both individual and community level. This is done in the form of workshops, courses, discussion groups, etc.

Neuroscientists have recently discovered mirror neurons, under which human beings have the ability to imitate, like animals ( Setting Lacoboni among others) thing theorists of Social Learning Ability (Vygotsky, Dollar, Rotter) and derived his theory of Social Cognitive Learning (Bandura, 1986) have been saying time with other words, we learn models (vicarious learning), not only for ourselves (active learning). The first models are our parents, then the rest of the family, then the school: teachers, peer groups etc .... In short, our environment.

Albert Bandura one of the leading exponents of these theories, points out 3 types of environment: the tax, the chosen and constructed. The family enters the first group. Peer group in the second. The built: it is the one I built, I think. environmental factors not only determine our behavior, we also add cognitive factors, namely: mental processes. Both factors are present in learning.

In 1953 Bandura joined the academic team at Stanford University where he spent over half a century active in teaching and research. His initial research program focused on social modeling of human development and change . Came to theorize that transcends the imitation modeling (as hitherto believed) and it is supported on a selective choice of what you want to imitate, so half a cognitive process in which abstractions are made, new amalgam, resolve problems, etc. He and colleagues found in their research (see exp. Bobo doll, for example.) An aggressive parental modeling, produced aggressive children. Dr

Bandura and colleagues also studied the influence of violent television programming was in children exposed to it, concluding that children exposed to heavy doses of violence became violent. The commission Eisenhower (1969) would publish a conclusive report to that effect, but the Broadcasting Industry and Snuff industry closed ranks and fought back.

Of all the ways was amply documented (Bandura, 1973, 2004) and Television Industry uses mechanisms by which the moral sanction is disabled to use the issue of violent programs for commercial purposes. Deactivation moral is the same as applies in the perpetration of crimes against humanity. the moral is reflected both in the case of restraining inhuman behavior, and behave in a humane manner and proactive (Bandura, 1999)

The self-regulatory mechanisms of moral authority, not put in functioning unless activated (by a motivation rooted in values). inhuman behaviors are disengaged moral authority utlizando certain maneuvers for example, cognitive restructuring of inhumane conduct finding a "moral justification" or blurring of responsibility or blaming it on a superior (obedience) , or minimizing the consequences dehumanizing victims.

summary: altruism, pro-social, is taught and learned by models. It is based on universal values and is activated by motivation of wanting to good.
